Against Cuts in Independent Performing Arts
Dance is experiencing disproportionate and inequitable budget cuts across Europe.
MoreThe independent performing arts scene in Germany issues an urgent message to Germany’s Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.
The German independent performing arts scene is at risk.
Contrary to the agreement to "strengthen" the Alliance of International Production Houses "as innovation drivers" in the performing arts, the Federal Cabinet decides with the budget draft 2025, to cut its funding.
The Alliance of International Production Houses unites the seven largest centres for independent performing arts in Germany: FFT Düsseldorf, HAU Hebbel am Ufer Berlin, HELLERAU Europäisches Zentrum der Künste Dresden, Kampnagel Hamburg, Künstler*innenhaus Mousonturm Frankfurt a.M., PACT Zollverein Essen, and tanzhaus nrw Düsseldorf.
In recent years, these centres have continuously developed forms of intensive cooperation with over a thousand artists and partner organizations in Europe and around the world, reaching hundreds of thousands of spectators nationwide in highly diverse urban societies.
For many years, the Alliance of International Production Houses has been an extremely successful model of cultural collaboration. In its tenth year of existence, this association of the largest production houses in Germany’s independent art and performance arts scene has been informed that the entirety of its federal funding will be cut in the coming budget.
Shutting down the Alliance of International Production Houses and cuts to the Performing Arts Fund mean that a total of €10 million less funding will be available to the artistic communities. Smaller grants, such as the funds for the DanceOn dance project, have also been completely cut from the budget announced by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM).
